CONSERVATION RESULTS
WWF: Saving Whales and Dolphins for the Future
Contrary to what most people think, it is entanglement in fishing
gear--not whaling--that is the greatest threat to whales and dolphins
(cetaceans) today. Several species and many populations will be lost
in the near future if nothing is done to address this danger. While
the populations of whales were decimated historically by whaling, the
global ban on whaling, which WWF has consistently fought to maintain,
has worked to protect the great whales from hunting. But the danger of
becoming entangled in fishing gear and drowning affects all cetacean
species in the oceans--from the largest whales to the smallest
dolphins. WWF is addressing this new challenge of bycatch by setting
up marine protected areas and working with fishing industries to
ensure a hopeful future for these incredible ocean mammals.

Protecting the Galápagos Islands for Over 40 Years
Free of humans for almost their entire history, the Galápagos
Islands--located off the coast of Ecuador--have developed some of the
most unique forms of life on the planet. But today, many people visit
and live on these amazing islands and their impact is leading to
degraded habitats and overharvested resources, which may never be
restored. WWF has supported conservation of the Galápagos since the
early 1960s, and over the years we have achieved many successes in the
preservation of these islands.

Stop Cuts for Tigers, Rhinos, Marine Turtles, and Others!
You can help stop big cuts in programs that protect tigers, rhinos,
elephants, great apes, marine turtles, and neotropical migratory
birds. The president has asked Congress to slash funding for these
initiatives. WWF activists succeeded in preventing similar cuts last
year and even convinced Congress to increase some of the funding. We
need your help to secure a victory for imperiled species once again!
