TAKE ACTION: Tell Gov. Paterson: If At First You Don't
Succeed...
***********************************************************

Dear Alan,

A few weeks we asked you to call and write the Gov. David
Paterson asking him to give the public more time to speak out on
proposed gas drilling in the Marcellus shale -- arguably the
most critical environmental issue facing New York.

The good news? Gov. Paterson is giving New Yorkers another month
to weigh in on a state plan to oversee gas drilling.

The bad news? The state's plan is fatally flawed. You could
drive a Texas gas drilling rig through the loopholes. And if we
don't send it back to the drawing board, that's exactly what
will happen.

We've spent the past few weeks combing through the 800-plus-page
document. And while its bulk may make it seem comprehensive,
it's actually woefully insufficient. It gives gas drillers lots
of wiggle room to blast millions of gallons of chemically
treated water underground without ensuring drilling toxins don't
contaminate drinking water. In fact, in the entire stack of
pages, there's not a single rule that industry will have to
follow. Not a comforting thought when our water supplies are at
stake.

Will you join us in asking Governor Paterson to scrap this plan
and start over? They should take the time that's necessary to do
a serious environmental review and come up with rules that are
transparent, consistent, and enforceable. You know, the kind of
rules industry has to actually follow.

We've got just a few short weeks left to convince the Governor
and the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental
Conservation. Will you write to them today?
